Beginning English Instructor – Youth
We are looking for an in-person after-school Beginning English Instructor that will support immigrant and refugee high school students by providing opportunities to learn, practice, and understand basic English language in Kandelia’s After School Program from October 2025 -May 2026 (except during school breaks). Classes are twice a week (Mondays/Tuesdays from 3:45 – 5:15pm) at the Seattle World School (1700 E Union St Seattle, WA 98122) with potential off-site field trips.
Contract Responsibilities
- Facilitate the English Class by creating a safe, supportive, interactive and engaging environment; overseeing classroom management; and having a lesson plan prepared prior to each class
- Coordinate with Kandelia staff and volunteers to plan each class and field trip
- Responsible for creating curriculums and field trips with lesson plans that meet the
needs of newcomer students with beginner English proficiency - Submit a monthly summary of the lesson plans prior to each month that include lesson objectives and activity descriptions
- Track attendance in all classes and submit attendance logs to Kandelia staff daily.
- Occasionally administer Kandelia surveys and assessments to participants to evaluate participants’ learning and ensure program is meeting student needs
Preferred Qualifications/Requirements
- Experience working with high school age students ages 13-21
- Experience working with immigrants and/or refugees
- Experience working with English Language Learners
- Ability to design engaging lessons that are interactive, collaborative and fun!
- Legal clearance to work with minors and within the school is non-negotiable and applicant must pass a background check and any other tests required by Seattle Public Schools or government partners.
Payment:
$31/hr. This position is a contractor position. Instructor will be paid the following per class:
- 1.5 hours of instruction
- 1 hour of curriculum development/lesson plan creation
- 0.75 hours of preparation/planning per each class.
- TOTAL: 3.25 hours or $100.75 per class
- Estimated 55 classes or $5,541.25
There may be additional pay for coordination and planning meetings with Kandelia staff.
English Conversation Club Instructor – Youth
We are looking for an in-person after-school English Conversation Club Instructor that will support immigrant and refugee high school students by providing opportunities to practice English in different age-appropriate scenarios and environments in the classroom, field trips and other off-site activities. English Conversation Club is a part of Kandelia’s After School Program and runs from October 2025 – May 2026 (except during school breaks). Classes are once a week (Thursdays from 3:45 – 5:15pm) at the Seattle World School (1700 E Union St Seattle, WA 98122) with potential off-site field trips.
Contract Responsibilities
- Facilitate the English Conversation Club by creating a safe, supportive, interactive and engaging environment; overseeing classroom management; and having a lesson plan prepared prior to each class
- Coordinate with Kandelia staff and volunteers to plan each class
- Coordinate with Kandelia to create field trip and off-site activities where students can practice English (ex. grocery store, restaurants, movie theaters, coffee shops, and more)
- Responsible for creating curriculum and lesson plans that meet the needs of newcomer students with beginner to intermediate English proficiency
- Submit a monthly summary of the lesson plans prior to each month that include lesson objectives and activity descriptions
- Track attendance in all classes and deliver attendance logs to Kandelia staff daily.
- Occasionally administer Kandelia surveys and assessments to participants to evaluate participants’ learning and ensure program is meeting student needs

Digital Literacy Instructor – Adults
We are looking for an online Digital Literacy Instructor who will support immigrant and refugee adults in learning basic computer and digital literacy skills. The program utilizes the Northstar Digital Literacy curriculum and modules in one-on-one or small-group settings. Classes are scheduled by participant and instructor availability. Digital Literacy is a part of Kandelia’s Family Programs that supports the guardians of newly arrived immigrant and refugee students.
Contract Responsibilities
- Receive training on Northstar Digital Literacy curriculum and modules
- Facilitate Digital Literacy class by creating a safe, supportive, interactive, and engaging environment and having a lesson plan prepared prior to each class.
- Coordinate with Kandelia staff and partners to plan and schedule each class
- Responsible for creating curriculum and lesson plans that meet the needs of newcomer participants
- Submit a monthly report of accomplishments, challenges, and progress.
- Track attendance in all classes and deliver attendance logs to Kandelia staff daily
- Occasionally distribute Kandelia surveys to participants to ensure program success and is meeting student needs
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with adults
- Experience working with immigrants and/or refugees
- Experience working with English Language Learners
- Experience working with remote technology such as Zoom
- Ability to design engaging lessons that are interactive, collaborative and fun!
Payment:
Instruction Time: $31/hr. This position is a contractor position.
- Prep time will be paid at 20% of the instruction rate, which is $6.20 per hour.
- Since the class is almost one-on-one, and many lessons are repeated across participants, prep time per session should be minimal. If the class has 50 hours per month, the payment would be approximately $1,865.
There may be additional pay for coordination and planning meetings with Kandelia staff ($30/hour)
